Please attend the Food Coop General Meeting
this Tuesday, July 28th, 2015.
Speak against raising the vote majority
from 51% to 75% to ratify a boycott.
Challenge another attempt to prevent boycotts of Israeli products.
Please attend the Food Coop’s July 28th General Meeting (GM). Speak up against the attempt to institute a super-majority boycott rule at the time when our Sodastream boycott is due for a vote at an upcoming GM. Although it will only be presented as a discussion item at the July GM, we all need voice our opposition to a super-majority vote from its onset. Below is the discussion item proposed by member Jesse Rosenfeld:
Discussion: “A Smarter, More Cooperative Boycott Policy”
Officially establish PSFC’s boycott policy. The guidelines are too vague suggesting a 51%-49% majority to pass a boycott. The official majority should be at least 75%.
The Food Coop has a long tradition of applying the simple majority rule of 51%-49% to pass a boycott. There is nothing vague about it.
What is vague, however, is Jesse Rosenfeld’s failure to say that when the product is manufactured by an Israeli company, he wants at least a 75% majority.
The Coop clearly has a long tradition for boycotting products only when they violate our Misssion Statement. These conditions include products made through exploitation such as discrimination, labor and environmental abuse. A simple majority vote has been used to pass all of our past boycotts and we should continue to use it. It’s a tried and true method that works and is democratic.
Help us speak up at the July GM to demand that we keep the 51%-49% vote requirement and prevent the minority from dictating future boycotts. Sign up for workslot credit to attend the July GM. We look forward to seeing you next Tuesday at the GM:
