Food Justice & Ecological Damage in Palestine/Israel

Joel Kovel will speak on how Zionist ideology and policy have created an environmental crisis in Palestine/Israel. While this crisis mainly impacts Palestinians, it affects food production and the quality of life of all humans in this region. Water usage and water, air and ground pollution by Israeli settlers, industrialists, weapons manufacturers, & the Israeli military will be addressed. A discussion will follow Kovel’s presentation.
Joel Kovel is an anti-Zionist, anti-capitalist Jew and pro-peace activist who is editor-in-chief of the academic quarterly Capitalism Nature Socialism. He has authored over ten books including Overcoming Zionism: Creating a Single Democratic State in Israel/Palestine (2007). A former psychiatrist/psychoanalyst and Green party member who ran for Senate, Kovel currently leads a movement called Eco-Socialist Horizons. He lectures globally on ecology, socialism and Zionism.
Moderator: Dennis James is a Food Coop member and retired attorney living and writing short stories in Brooklyn. Since the 1960s, he’s been active in Palestinian issues in Detroit and New York. He co-founded the Committee for the Open Discussion of Zionism (CODZ). Dennis traveled to Gaza with Code Pink in May/June of 2009.
